Pengukuran TDS dilakukan oleh breeder maupun hobbies baik untuk air sumber maupun air di dalam kolam secara berkala. Air Sumber yang mengandung kadar TDS yang terlalu tinggi di yakini kurang sesuai bagi pertumbuhan koi yang optimal. Water Treatment dilakukan untuk menurunkan kadar TDS Air Sumber antara lain dengan Carbon Filtration, RO (Reverse Osmosis) proses, Distillation dan juga Deionization.

Kadar TDS dalam air kolam dapat meningkat (lebih tinggi dari kadar TDS Air Sumber) yang dipengaruhi oleh fungsi kerja filtrasi yang kurang optimal, pemberian garam dan obat-obatan, pakan yang berlebihan dan hasil metabolisme ikan dan tumbuhan air. Garam atau Sodium Chloride (NaCl) umum digunakan dalam perawatan kesehatan dan pemeliharaan ikan terutama Koi.

Garam berguna dalam mengobati penyakit yang disebabkan oleh parasit. Garam berfungsi menghilangkan tujuh dari sembilan parasit yang umum ditemukan di kolam Koi seperti:

Kebanyakan ikan air tawar termasuk ikan koi memiliki konsentrasi garam internal sebesar 1,0% atau 10 ppt/bagian per seribu (ppt/parts per thousand) yang lebih tinggi daripada lingkungan air mereka.
Dalam kondisi demikian proses osmosis mentransfer air dari salinitas rendah kolam ke dalam jaringan tissue ikan koi. Penambahan garam ke dalam kolam koi akan menurunkan tekanan osmosis air kolam ke Ikan Koi. Hal ini akan mengurangi upaya ikan Koi dalam menghilangkan kelebihan air dari dalam tubuh. Energi yang tersimpan ini digunakan oleh Ikan Koi untuk memperkuat daya kekebalan tubuh (immune system) terhadap penyakit/melawan penyakit.

Di sisi lain, jika kadar salinitas air kolam mendekati kadar salinitas ikan, tekanan osmosis akan berlaku sebaliknya. Artinya dari tubuh ikan koi keluar ke air kolam yang dapat mengakibatkan ikan koi mati dehidrashi.

Kadar Salinitas antara 0,3% dan 0,5% (3 sampai 5 ppt) akan mengganggu keseimbangan osmotik dari beberapa parasit dan mengakibatkan parasit akan mengalami dehidrasi.

Konsentrasi garam 0,3% efektif pada detoksifikasi nitrit dan konsentrasi 0,25% atau lebih tinggi telah digunakan untuk mengontrol alga string.

pH meter adalah alat untuk mengukur tingkat keasaman air. Nilai pH 7,0 merupakan level netral. pH di bawah 7,0 adalah asam dan diatas 7,0 adalah basa. Sebagian besar air tawar alami akan memiliki nilai pH dari pH 5,0 - 8,5. Sedangkan pH air laut cukup konstan sekitar 8.1. Kadar pH di bawah 4,0 atau di atas 8,3 adalah kadar yang tidak sesuai untuk makhluk hidup, tanaman, ikan atau invertebrata tidak dapat bertahan hidup. Fluktuasi drastis dari pH air kolam dapat menyebabkan ikan koi stress dan juga sakit. Perubahan PH sering terjadi disebabkan penambahan secara berlebihan bahan kimia ke dalam kolam, air hujan maupun dari akumulasi proses metabolisme ikan dan tanamaman air. Pengukuran kadar pH secara teratur sebagai salah satu cara perlindungan terhadap kesehatan ikan koi kesayangan kita. pH tester sering juga digunakan untuk pengukuran kadar pH sumber air yang mungkin berubah. Memastikan pH sumber sesuai dengan parameter yang dikehendaki sebelum masuk dalam kolam atau digunakan untuk memelihara ikan Koi.
